Project Overview
Arts of August is a Maine-based coastal art studio by artist Kaleigh Anderson. The brand spans original oil paintings, fine art prints, gold foil and gold leaf details, coastal scenes, commissions, and Maine- and Martha's Vineyard-inspired artwork.
This project focused on improving the website's visibility and extractability for generative search engines and AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot.
The goal was not just traditional SEO. The goal was to make Arts of August easier for AI systems to understand, cite, summarize, and recommend.
The Challenge
Small creative businesses often have beautiful work, loyal customers, and meaningful stories — but their websites don't always explain those signals clearly enough for search engines or AI systems.
For Arts of August, the substance was there: a real artist, a recognizable coastal point of view, original oil-on-canvas work, gold foil and gold leaf process details, Maine and Martha's Vineyard place-based inspiration, commissions, art markets and showings, Etsy listings, customer reviews, and local credibility.
But much of that context was either too light, too scattered, or not structured in a way that AI systems could confidently extract.
The project became a translation problem: how do you make a creative business understandable to both humans and machines without flattening the art into keywords?
Why GEO Matters for Creative Businesses
GEO — generative engine optimization — is the practice of making a brand, business, or website easier for AI-powered search and answer systems to understand.
Traditional SEO focuses on rankings, keywords, backlinks, and page structure. GEO adds another layer:
- Can an AI system understand who the artist is?
- Can it identify the studio as a real entity?
- Can it extract accurate facts about materials, process, products, locations, events, and commissions?
- Can it distinguish supported claims from vague marketing language?
- Can it cite the website as a useful source?
- Can it answer a customer's question clearly using the site's content?
For a creative business, this matters because customers are increasingly asking AI tools questions like:
- "Find Maine coastal artists who sell prints."
- "Who paints Martha's Vineyard-inspired artwork?"
- "Where can I buy original coastal oil paintings?"
- "What local artists are showing work near Portland, Maine?"
- "Can I commission a custom painting of a meaningful place?"
If the website doesn't clearly answer those questions, AI systems may skip over it — even if the business is a perfect match.
Audit Findings
The Arts of August website already had a strong foundation. Several important elements were in place:
llms.txtfile at/llms.txt- LocalBusiness JSON-LD schema on the homepage
- FAQPage JSON-LD schema and a clear FAQ section
- Quality Promise / trust-building language
- Artist bio and basic studio information
- Meta title, meta description, canonical tags, and Open Graph tags
- Crawlable site structure and existing
og:image
The site wasn't starting from zero. But the GEO audit identified several gaps that could limit AI visibility and citation quality:
- No Person schema for Kaleigh Anderson
- No WebSite schema
- No BreadcrumbList schema
- No Product JSON-LD for individual Etsy listings
llms.txtwas too thin and needed richer extractable studio facts- About content was too light for AI citation
- Materials and process details weren't specific enough
- Events and showings weren't structured clearly
- Testimonials and reviews weren't yet prepared for trust signals or Review schema
- Third-party corroboration opportunities needed to be identified
The opportunity was to strengthen Arts of August as an entity: artist, studio, location, materials, process, products, events, reviews, and third-party credibility.
Technical GEO Improvements
The first layer of work focused on structured data and AI-readable site architecture. The site now includes:
- Person schema for Kaleigh Anderson
- WebSite schema
- BreadcrumbList schema
- Article schema on the dedicated About page
- ImageObject schema
- Review schema tied to a real Etsy review
- Event schema for upcoming events and showings
- Product JSON-LD for every Etsy listing in
ShopEtsy.tsx, including name, image, URL, price, currency, brand, material, country of origin, and manufacturer details - Expanded
llms.txtwith richer extractable facts about the studio, materials, shipping/returns, commissions, and contact details - Page metadata, canonical tags, and sitemap entry for the new About page
What was already working — LocalBusiness schema, FAQPage schema, existing Open Graph image, and crawlable page structure — was preserved.
The goal wasn't to over-engineer the site. It was to give AI systems clearer facts in formats they already know how to read.
Content & Entity Strategy
The second layer of work focused on content. For AI search, structured data is helpful, but it isn't enough. AI systems also need substantive prose that explains the business clearly and accurately.
The content strategy focused on entity-building:
- Who Kaleigh Anderson is
- What Arts of August is
- Where the studio is rooted
- What materials are used
- How the paintings are created
- What places inspire the work
- What products are available
- What commissions are accepted
- Where the work has been shown
- What customers have said
This content was designed to be useful for humans first, while also making the brand more extractable for AI systems.
Artist / About Page Development
A major part of the project was creating a dedicated /about page that could serve as a richer source of truth for Arts of August.
The page includes a full artist bio, pull quote, Materials & Process section, Commissions section, Events & Showings section, past placements, a real Etsy review from Kristen, a closing commission / inquiry CTA, and structured metadata and schema to support AI extraction.
The page establishes Kaleigh Anderson as the artist behind Arts of August and connects the work to Scarborough, Maine; the Scarborough marsh; the Maine coast; Martha's Vineyard; Aquinnah; Lucy Vincent Beach; and coastal travel.
It also explains:
- Her training under Susan Roux at Roux & Cyr International Fine Art Gallery in Portland, Maine
- Her oil-on-canvas practice
- Her gold foil and gold leaf process
- That much of her work begins with photographs but is interpreted by hand
- That she adjusts composition, color, lighting, layering, and brushwork rather than copying directly
The About page moved from a basic introduction to a more complete source of truth.
Materials & Process Content
More specific language was developed around materials and process. Key facts prepared for the website included:
- Primary medium: oil on canvas
- Select works include gold foil or gold leaf
- Gold foil is applied directly to the canvas and painted into the surface
- Most works begin from photograph references
- The photograph becomes a starting point, not a copy
- Kaleigh interprets images through composition, color, lighting, layering, and brushwork
- Original paintings often take around 30–40 hours, depending on size, detail, drying time, and materials
- Varnish is part of the finishing process, but specific varnish naming should be confirmed before making a permanent materials claim
An important nuance: Gamblin Satin Varnish appeared in social content, but shouldn't be stated globally on the site unless confirmed.
Good GEO isn't just about adding more claims. It's about making claims that are accurate, supportable, and safe to repeat.
Commission Content
Commission content was prepared to explain what kinds of custom work Arts of August accepts. The recommended positioning focused on select commissions for:
- Meaningful places
- Coastal scenes
- Personal gifts
- Nurseries
- Family homes
- Special occasions
- Martha's Vineyard-inspired pieces
- Personally significant places
The commission CTA: "Inquire About a Commission."
The goal was to help both customers and AI systems understand when Arts of August is a good fit for custom work.
Product & Review Schema
Because Arts of August sells through Etsy, the website needed to make product data easier to understand and connect back to live listings.
Product JSON-LD was added for individual Etsy listings, including product name, image, URL, price, currency, brand, material, country of origin, and manufacturer details. Product schema helps connect Etsy listings back to the Arts of August brand.
Review and trust-building opportunities were also identified. A real Etsy review for Tethered by the Tide was prepared as social proof — a 5-star rating that praised color, detail, seller communication, shipping speed, and overall experience. Review schema was added carefully, using only that real Etsy review.
- No fabricated review data was used
- Review schema was only used where connected accurately to the product/review
- Informal or family-related comments were not turned into formal Review schema
Trust signals only work if they are true.
Local and Event-Based Authority
Arts of August had real-world credibility that needed to be structured more clearly. A substantial Events & Showings section was added to the dedicated About page, with events structured using Event schema.

Image and Alt Text Strategy
Descriptive alt text guidance was created for artist, process, and product images. Examples included:
- "Kaleigh Anderson painting outdoors on Martha's Vineyard near the Aquinnah cliffs"
- "Oil painting of Lucy Vincent Beach in progress on an easel"
- "Arts of August coastal oil painting with gold foil detail"
- "Maine rowboat oil painting by Kaleigh Anderson"
- "Coastal cottage painting interpreted from a photograph by Arts of August"
The goal wasn't to stuff keywords into images. The goal was to describe what each image actually shows in a way that supports accessibility, search, and AI understanding.
Entities Strengthened
The work intentionally reinforced the people, places, materials, and concepts most central to Arts of August:
- Kaleigh Anderson · Arts of August
- Maine artist · Scarborough Maine artist
- Coastal oil paintings · Maine coastal art
- Scarborough marsh · Martha's Vineyard art · Aquinnah · Lucy Vincent Beach
- Oil on canvas · Gold foil painting · Gold leaf painting
- Commissioned coastal artwork · Custom paintings
- Maine art markets · Art in the Park South Portland · Farmers Market at The Downs · The Downtown Social Portland Maine
- Susan Roux · Roux & Cyr International Fine Art Gallery
This is where GEO becomes different from basic SEO. The site isn't just trying to rank for isolated keywords. It's trying to become understandable as a connected entity in a larger knowledge environment.
Final Implementation Update
After the initial GEO audit, the site was updated with several additional AI-readability improvements:
- Dedicated
/aboutpage added as a deeper artist and studio source of truth - Navigation updated to include About and Events
- Homepage About section updated with a "Read the full story" link
- TL;DR summary lines added under key H2 sections to improve extractability
- Product JSON-LD expanded to include material and country of origin
- Event schema added for upcoming events
- Review schema added using a real Etsy review
- Sitemap updated to include the new About page
This moved the project from strategy and recommendations into a more complete implementation: structured data, human-readable content, AI-readable summaries, and clearer entity signals working together.
Expected Impact
The work gives the site a stronger foundation for AI search visibility and answer-engine readiness. The site is now better positioned to:
- Be understood by AI systems
- Support more accurate AI-generated summaries
- Surface for relevant artist, location, commission, and coastal art queries
- Connect product listings to the Arts of August brand
- Make artist and process details easier to cite
- Strengthen trust through real reviews and event history
- Support future growth through clearer source-of-truth content
This kind of work doesn't guarantee instant visibility in AI search. But it gives the website a much stronger foundation for being found, understood, and recommended.
What This Shows About ASQ Ashlee's Approach
This project wasn't just SEO cleanup. It was GEO and entity optimization for a small creative business.
The work combined structured data, richer artist content, product schema, process documentation, local and geographic signals, trust-building content, review readiness, event and exhibition structure, AI-readable llms.txt content, and human-readable storytelling.
The ASQ approach starts with the real business, not the tool. For Arts of August, the goal wasn't to make the website sound more optimized. The goal was to make the artist, work, process, products, and credibility easier to understand — for humans and for AI systems.
Generative search doesn't just reward websites with keywords. It rewards businesses that can explain who they are, what they do, where they belong, and why they can be trusted.
